Families Week is Australia’s annual celebration of the importance of families. It is timed to coincide with the UN International Day of Families on 15 May.

Families Week 2026 is happening from 11–17 May 2026.

This year’s theme, “Celebrating Every Family, Everywhere,” highlights the value of connection, support and inclusivity within families, bringing individuals and organisations across the nation together.

The primary aim of Families Week is to celebrate the indispensable role that families play in society while reflecting on their crucial function in teaching, supporting and nurturing children throughout their growth.

Everyone—including schools, councils, companies and individuals—is invited to participate in this nationwide initiative and encouraged to celebrate with their families, connect with friends and extended family and engage in community activities.

Each year, tens of thousands of people and hundreds of organisations celebrate Families Week across Australia.

Participating organisations undertake a wide range of events such as morning teas, sausage sizzles, playgroup visits, family picnics, artwork displays, family information days, drawing competitions, workshops, storytelling events and more. Find an event near you.

There are two main ways to get involved.

First, if you know of, or are involved with, a community organisation, ask them to arrange an event and register it with Families Australia. Events are limited only by imagination! In the past, organisations have hosted BBQs, picnics, seminars on parenting, art displays, open days, morning teas, family-friendly days at work, and so much more.

Second, use Families Week to celebrate within your family. Not sure how? Check out our ideas for celebrating.

Families Week is run by Families Australia – the national peak body for families, children and young people. Through policy advice to the Federal Government, Families Australia advocates for the wellbeing of families, especially those facing vulnerability and marginalisation.

Families Week started in 2003 as a Families Australia initiative that aimed to give families, their children and communities the opportunity to build a better future.

Families Week is funded by the Australian Government Department of Social Services.
